Social Networking and Libraries

Library staff strive to be current on all the latest technology, so they can advertise their libraries to full potential and help patrons with their tech related questions.  Included in technology are social networking platforms.  Not only do library users utilize social networks to connect with friends and family, library staff can use social networks to advertise and promote their library and programming created for their patrons.  Networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter are all social media platforms that are used by different demographics.  Snapchat and Instagram mainly attract a younger following, while Facebook and Twitter have an older demographic.  It is important for library staff to cross-post amongst all of the different social media platforms, while also utilizing good old-fashioned hard copy advertising along with in-library digital advertising.  Repetition is crucial to social networking, as shown "when patrons see the same ad repeatedly in different contexts, you have a better chance of actually reaching them" (Hilburn, 2020).  Social media networking is very important to libraries getting the word out for their programming and what they can offer their patronage.  Successful social networking brings more people in to the library which, in turn, creates more public support for the library and creates neighborhoods with strong ties to their public institutions.
