Libraries as Permeable Spaces

Image
In order to be successful, a student must have the desire to learn and study. Libraries have always provided this space for dedicated students to study. One reason libraries have been a space for studying is because of libraries' policy of being a quiet space.  Doing this encourages student concentration to work but, what else can academic libraries do to help improve students’ success? The answer lies in creating spaces of interaction within libraries.  Students can interact within libraries by using services that are for self-improvement. These services included tutoring services and a writing center. Local Community Colleges such as Miracosta in Oceanside offer such services.  Recently, libraries like the Architecture and Building and Planning Library at the University of Melbourne have focused on improving their physical spaces by being a place of permeability.  In this context, permeability is a place that provides “structural .. features  in building ...

Unlocking Social Media Power within Libraries.

Image
Libraries have had a  history of being one of the first institutions to embrace the technologies of each generation. Examples include using 3D printers and computers. For this new generation, the defining technology of our times is the creation of social media.   With a variety of social media platforms to use for personal use, each platform has unique ways to connect and grow communities through interactive media (TikTok), video sharing (YouTube), social network (Facebook), and Photo Sharing (Instagram). One commonality each has though is the way each platform shares the latest news. It is only different in how what they are reaching.  Because of these reasons, social media will not only stay in our lives for good but, will continue to evolve.  Local public libraries have begun to implement social media in spreading the word about what is going on in the library. Unfortunately, these libraries are still not creating lasting impacts like other libraries because ...

Changing The Perception of the Library as a Social Hub

Image
Despite being a place where books and knowledge abound, modern librarians are keen on making the library a place where the community feels connected to the library as a space where members of the community gather. This shift is going against the traditional view of what the library functions as a space dedicated to being a place of study for students and learners. With the help of modern librarians, the perception of the library is more than that, and being a place of social activity is becoming a reality for a few libraries. But how can a library be a center of social activity? It’s by changing their perception of who gathers in libraries. To change that perception libraries must go out of the library and join a community organization. Librarians must think beyond of who they are as a profession but, as a person within the community. This is an old school, grassroots method of joining other neighborhood organizations and attending local meetings. It may be old but, it can be effective...

Nashville : Solutions for the Homeless found in the Library

Image
Unlike the Public Library in Cincinnati, the library near my hometown in Southern California doesn’t cater to one demographic: the homeless. Though it may be small, the homeless are there. Policies were made to include the homeless by American Library Association but,  I have yet to see them implemented in my city library.  It’s not an issue as of right now, but will the homeless be accepted in libraries everywhere? What role will the homeless play within the library in the future? The Downton Nashville Library is an example of what may come to California Public Libraries.  In the Downton Nashville Library, the librarians there have viewed the homeless not only as equal patrons but as important patrons. They are so important the library has renovated a section of the library and placed more computers and tables with ethernet connections and power outlets just so the homeless can access them. Not only does the Nashville Library provide access to the internet, but they also...

The libraries are here to support students of all ages with research help, finding resources, and providing study spaces. Libraries And The Homeless

Libraries and the homeless   For thousands of people in California , and many more in the United states , a safe environment away from the intense heat of the summer or the intense rains and cold weather of the winter is not a privilege they have . T her e is an increasing number of unhoused individuals in the world right now . O ne place that can provide a respite from the toils of the weather is the Public Library . I n the broadcast “ Dallas library E mbraces R ole as H aven for the H omeless ,” it mentions that not only are libraries a safe place to rest and be out of the weather, but some libraries are also offering classes and other opportunities for the unhoused. The Dallas library offers a keyboarding class that allows homeless individuals to feel seen as a part of something that can help with the unrelenting loneliness of homelessness. They even serve hot coffee in the mornings! Some libraries like the Hedberg Public Library in Ohio team up with...

Libraries as a Social Hub

Image
Libraries of the past used to be a quiet space to privately research, check out books or read the newspaper. Libraries of today have evolved into social hubs for the community. Librarians are no longer shushing conversations in the stacks. They are encouraging the use of the library for book clubs, teen scene, movie nights, classes and other community activities. A letter writer to the Guardian stated that “ libraries are one of the vehicles for local libraries to deliver community engagement and equality and diversity”. The Importance of libraries is that they can attract people of all ages and sections of a community.       A library in Australia, after noticing the high rates of retiring baby boomers, created opportunities for them to enhance public service. By offering an environment rich with physical and technological resources, volunteer opportunities and more. They are helping spread awareness that library servi...

I added the Search this Blog gadget to our blog.  By adding this gadget, users are able to search by keyword to find the subject they would like to read about.  This makes accessing blog posts easier so users don't have to search through a list of blog posts for the topic they are interested in.

Libraries and Student Success

Image
In educational settings, one of the most beneficial supports for student success is the library.  School libraries are sometimes the only opportunity students have to access books for pleasure reading or help with technology.  The better equipped a library is with relevant textual resources and staff with technical knowledge, the bigger the advantage to the students that library and staff serve.  Libraries that have a current selection of high-quality fiction and nonfiction, those which hold high interest of students, greatly benefit students by engaging them and creating a cycle of wanting to read and learn more.  The better the collection development is of a library, the more well-served students are.  Students can learn valuable research skills from library staff, skills that will benefit students for their entire educational career.  Most schools now offer technology one-to-one to all students.  Library staff and teachers can guide young res...

Libraries and the Homeless

Image
The issue of homelessness seems like one that will never be solved.  Whether individuals end up unhoused due to unfortunate circumstances, personal choice, or mental health issues, there will always be homeless people.  How the homeless crisis is dealt with is a huge issue, one that looms large for many municipalities both large and small.  One public agency that has become a de facto support system for many homeless is the public library.  Individuals can escape the heat or cold during library open hours, find entertainment in books and use of computers, and have access to bathrooms, all for free.  It has become so normalized for homeless to utilize libraries, that "many libraries have added social workers to their staff" to connect these individuals to other community agencies to help them meet their needs ("US Libraries," 2023). The extent library staff go to to help homeless is always increasing.  At some libraries, staff provide clothing, a...

Social Networking and Libraries

Image
Library staff strive to be current on all the latest technology, so they can advertise their libraries to full potential and help patrons with their tech related questions.  Included in technology are social networking platforms.  Not only do library users utilize social networks to connect with friends and family, library staff can use social networks to advertise and promote their library and programming created for their patrons.  Networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter are all social media platforms that are used by different demographics.  Snapchat and Instagram mainly attract a younger following, while Facebook and Twitter have an older demographic.  It is important for library staff to cross-post amongst all of the different social media platforms, while also utilizing good old-fashioned hard copy advertising along with in-library digital advertising.  Repetition is crucial to social networking, as shown "when patrons see t...

Libraries as Social Hubs

Image
Libraries have served as gathering places for individuals since their inception.  The concept of bringing people together to a central location, one filled with original written thoughts and ideas, creates an ideal location to foster social interaction.  It is stated that "If you go back far enough, to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, " libraries  never were about books...They were sites of legal debates and community space..." (Librarians, 2021).  Libraries have progressed to buildings where individuals can go to study in solitude, but they are also areas where parents can bring children for puppet shows and social interaction, teens can discuss the latest graphic novel, or older generations can get support for learning new technology.  Libraries bring people together to discuss and learn from each other.  The age of social media we are in is not truly social, as gathering in a public setting would be.  It is thought that "Social media, as usua...
