Unlocking Social Media Power within Libraries.

Libraries have had a  history of being one of the first institutions to embrace the technologies of each generation. Examples include using 3D printers and computers. For this new generation, the defining technology of our times is the creation of social media.

With a variety of social media platforms to use for personal use, each platform has unique ways to connect and grow communities through interactive media (TikTok), video sharing (YouTube), social network (Facebook), and Photo Sharing (Instagram). One commonality each has though is the way each platform shares the latest news. It is only different in how what they are reaching.  Because of these reasons, social media will not only stay in our lives for good but, will continue to evolve.

Local public libraries have begun to implement social media in spreading the word about what is going on in the library. Unfortunately, these libraries are still not creating lasting impacts like other libraries because of their inability to differentiate between social media.  Instead, they use the same post for both their Facebook and Instagram accounts. Just using social media doesn’t mean you’ll be relevant. Libraries that don’t know how to use social media in a creative manner and market themselves on each platform properly will not survive in the future.

An example of a library that is thriving is one Canadian library. This is due to their TikTok account. Originally using it to target their teen patrons, it became a form of connecting nonlibrary users on “what libraries of today are about and to break . . traditional library stereotypes” (Hoenke, 25) This library is headed by a librarian who personally uses TikTok and picks on the latest trends. The librarians not only incorporate the latest trends but promotes community-based initiatives. A creative and passionate mind is needed to be successful in social media.
